Aikido was developed by as a martial art by Morihei Ueshiba who studied several martial arts since 1912. Known to many aikido practitioners as “O Sensei” or the “Great Teacher,” Ueshiba was able to develop the martial art based on a purely physical level using techniques and movements such those of “Jujitsu” and “Kenjutsu” called “aikido.”

It is believed that aikido was first introduced to the Western culture way back in 1951 by a martial arts practitioner Minoru Mochizuki when he visited France. Then, he introduced aikido and several aikido techniques to judo students in different areas of France. After this introduction, Tadashi Abe, who cane as the official Aikikai Honbu representative in 1952, remained in France for less than seven years and continued the pursuit.

The following year, Kenji Tomiki conducted a tour along with various martial arts delegates in 15 continental states in the US. And in that same year, Koichi Tohei of Aikikai Honbu was sent by for a year to Hawaii just to set up a number of dojos. After invading the US, Aikido gained patronage in the UK, Germany, and Australia. Today, thousands of dojos are set up for those who would want to learn the practice of the martial art.

BITS AND PIECES OF AIKIDO

If you are interested with aikido but do not have the time and money to go to a dojo and enroll for an aikido class, then you should find other means to do so. One of the easiest ways to introduce yourself into the exciting world of aikido is to browse the Internet and look for aikido video clips.

Being a limitless source of any information, browsing the Internet for various aikido video clips can give you better options and the specific details you would want to learn. Today, there are so many websites that offer aikido clip videos for free for those who would want to learn the basics and for those who would want to get an idea how the martial art works before enrolling to it.

Usually, aikido video clips contain loose form training or popularly known as “ki nagare.” Here, the aikido practitioners are just playing around even and after the martial art presentation. The most viewed aikido video clips are those of famous aikido practitioners while conducting their classes or during their practice. But since these are just clips, it is not possible for you to learn everything about the techniques of the martial art.

Amateurs who document the practitioner’s lessons and stunts during practice usually take these aikido video clips. Since these are taken in impromptu, you cannot expect high quality resolution and sound. The most common problem would be is that the aikido video clip has a noisy background due to the noises created by people from neighboring gym hall or from the enthusiastic audience inside the dojo.

After filming, they upload these files into the Internet so others can see it. Although these are just short clips, there is a possibility that you pick up aikido techniques that you can practice. Unlike in full-length aikido videos, the variety of aikido techniques is limited when you watch an aikido video clip.

Aikido video clips are available in various aikido sites or from yahoo, google, and u-tube. There are many more websites that offer free aikido video clips but expect that limited amount of information can be gathered.

By: Mark Etinger

If Scuba diving is more than just a hobby, sooner or later you’ll need to get a real dive watch. There are many types and brands of Scuba wristwatches, some of them are more resistant, some of them cost a lot of money and some of them just look nice. If you started with a 10 dollar diving watch, you probably want to get new one. Really. If for some reason your watch goes nuts underwater, you will not have any other way to time your dive and no other way to determine how long you can stay before decompression illness kicks in.

So first of all, start looking for watches that can take at least 200 meters of water. And I’m not talking about your “waterproof” watch which can take a bath, but will not stand underwater pressure. You probably won’t get that deep but 200 meter water resistance is the recommended minimum for any diving wristwatch due to tighter testing methods. Because the sun doesn’t shine in these depths, it is also recommended that your watch will have additional lighting or arms that glow in the dark. Even after 20 or 25 meters things get dark so any watch should have glowing, easy to read arrows and numbers. And try to read the watch from a fair distance. Without your glasses. But remember that LED or other electronic lighting can dry your battery faster when used often, so luminous paint will be a better choice here.

Adjustable bezel is the next thing to check. The bezel is the metal ring that sits around the face of the watch. Your watch should come with a one-way adjustable bezel. The “one-way” is counterclockwise so if the bezel is accidentally twisted, it will seem that you have been under water for a longer period rather than a short period. For the same reason the bezel should be tight and not easily moved.

Most divers dive towards the abyss with analog watches. Don’t really know why, but that’s the most common watch you’ll see underwater. Digital watches are kicking in due to relatively low prices and there’s nothing wrong with them, except that you have to know how to work the timers. There are also self winding dive watches and chronograph diving watches.

After you’ve made your choice, remember to wash the watch and bezel after each dive in the sea (salt water) or in the pool (chlorine). Oh, and don’t take the watch to the after dive sauna or hot-tub. The gaskets don’t like extreme temperature change. Inspect the seals and gaskets every once in a while and have them changed every 2 -3 years.

By: Raymond Burton

When it comes to setting and accomplishing your goals, often the first step is deciding exactly what goals you want to accomplish. Sometimes picking the actual goals you want to go after is harder than setting and accomplishing the goals themselves. Basically to narrow down what you should be focusing on, you can choose to work any goal that you feel is necessary for your health, stability and happiness.

These are goals that no matter how much time you invest in accomplishing them, you will always feel that your time was well invested.

Goal setting is nothing more than a formal process for personal planning. By setting goals on a routine basis you decide what you want to achieve, and then move in a step-by-step manner towards the achievement of these goals. The process of setting goals and targets allows you to choose where you want to go in life. By knowing exactly what you want to achieve, you know what you have to concentrate on to do it. You also learn to recognize what is actually nothing more than a distraction.

Goal setting is a standard technique used by professional athletes, successful business people and high achievers in all fields. It gives you long-term vision and provides you with short-term motivation.

It helps to focus your attention and knowledge which helps you to organize your resources. By setting sharp and clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless effort.

By setting goals, you will also raise your self confidence as you recognize your and ability to meet the goals that you have set. The process of achieving goals and seeing this achievement gives you confidence that you will be able to achieve higher and more difficult goals later on.

Goals are set on a number of different levels. The first step in picking out the goals you should concentrate on starts by sitting down and looking at the big picture. What do you want to accomplish, do, be and have in your life?

Second, you break these down into the smaller targets that you must hit so that you reach your overall lifetime goals. The process I use to pick out the goals I should concentrate on after I have my master list is very similar to an elimination tournament.

I first categorize the goals into health, financial, relationship and recreation. I make separate elimination sheets for each category. On the left of the sheet I list the goals. Then I clump them in two’s. I then push forward the winner of the two based on my motivation and desire to accomplish that goal. When the eliminations are done, I have the winning goals from each important group that I should concentrate on.

This keeps your focus on the goals that are truly important to you. When its important to you and both your motivation and desire are high, you greatly increase the probability that you will take the appropriate actions needed to fulfill your goals.

Finally, once you have your major goals, you start working towards achieving them. This brings you to the action part, which is where the achievers step forward and the wishers continue to dream.

By: Caroline Kelm

Imagine being on your last ski run, and heading down the mountain straight to your slopeside residence. You take off your boots, kick up your feet, and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate while watching the skiers come down the mountain. There are many places where you can achieve this by owning property slopeside next to the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village.

One of the many ski-in/ski-out options are the Tram Tower residences which include12 units in total. Built in the early 1990’s, the complex is located right off of the Lower Tram Line ski run. There are 2, 3, and 4 bedrooms units in the community that each come with underground parking. The Tram Tower community also has many amenities including a pool, tennis court, gym, hot tub, sauna, and men’s and women’s locker rooms. The complex has resort zoning, so owners can enter their unit into a short term rental program if they choose. A 2 bedroom townhome in the Tram Tower development lists for $1,745,000 and a 4 bedroom will run up to about $2,950,000.

Crystal Springs, located at the base of the mountain was completed in 2003. The ski-in/ski-out building is situated in the heart of Teton Village and is steps away from restaurants, shops and bars. The units are finished with granite counters, stainless appliances, hardwood floors, and fireplaces. One underground parking space comes with each condo. A 3 bedroom and 3 and a half bath condo will typically cost you between $2,200,000 and $2,495,000.

Another ski-in/ski-out option is the Teton Mountain Lodge, a condo-hotel project that was completed in 2002. The property functions like a hotel; however, the units are individually owned. Each condo owner has the option of putting their unit in the rental pool, where they can earn rental income. The hotel has a restaurant, spa, pool, 20-person hot tub, yoga room and fitness facility. With an on-site property management company, owners can truly enjoy worry-free ownership. A one bedroom studio in the Teton Mountain Lodge lists for approximately $565,000 and a 3 bedroom penthouse runs up to $2,895,000.

Owning a condo at the Four Seasons is another great way to be on the ski slopes while living in the lap of luxury. The five-star, five-diamond hotel has world class services and amenities including a full-service spa, 2 restaurants, ski valet, kids club room, pool, fitness facility, ski concierge and much more. The outdoor fire place allows owners and guests to relax by the fire while watching the skiers and snowboarders make their way down the mountain. The listing price for a condo in the Fours Seasons starts at $2,950,000 and goes up to around $3,800,000.

These are just a few examples of the many ski-in/ski-out real estate options in Teton Village. It is a great thing to be able to enjoy the beauty of the Jackson Hole area along with your favorite winter sport; however, it is even more magnificent to enjoy these moments with complete convenience and ease.

S3 and S5 – Two Generations of Ulta-Zoom Cameras by Canon

In common practice, the comparative test aims at distinguishing the advantages of one producer over another within one and the same price category and functional group. That is why models by different producers representing the same section of the market are taken for observation. Canon cameras are usually compared with their group-mates from Panasonic, Sony or Nikon. But we at DigiCamFriends.com have agreed to take another way and get to know what obvious innovations may be found in the Canon PowerShot S5 IS (hereafter, Canon S5) in comparison with the Canon PowerShot S3 IS (hereafter, Canon S3) that used to be extremely popular.

Let’s imagine we know nothing about new features developed by Canon for the new model S5 that appeared after the Canon S3:

Physical view

Canon models of S – series, being different from another Canon PowerShot “subclass” (that is models of A-series), are characterized as “amateurish” but with some skills of “professional”. This is for report or art-report shooting, but not for the motionless photos, something like “a tree and me” type. From this point of view both models have a very handy design.

In fact physical view of the camera has not been changed, except first- the enlarging of the movable screen from 2 to 2.5 inches and second- the replacement of one of the control buttons. And while the latter novelty hardly seems to be pleasant, the first one fits quite natural- it’s become more convenient to take photos with a larger screen.

Pic.1: Canon PowerShot S3 IS and PowerShot S5 IS; front.

Pic.2: Canon PowerShot S3 IS and PowerShot S5 IS; rear.

Pic.3: Canon PowerShot S3 IS and PowerShot S5 IS; movable screens.

Optics

The cameras have the same lens construction type with identical settings (the market interpretation of the term construction – the quantity of the optical elements and it’s groups). Unfortunately, there was no information found on the manufacturer’s Web-site mentioning that these lenses are identical; so I won’t insist on theoretical view point, but make a display with some photo examples.

Example 1 : Shots with max. depth of field (the aperture priority mode, the shutter is closed down; Flash is on; ISO80 sensitivity; the white balance – “Flash”). The distance between the objects is about 15-25 cm. Auto focus on the handle of the cup. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

Example 2 : Shots with min. depth of field (the aperture priority mode, the shutter is absolutely open; Flash is on; ISO80 sensitivity; the white balance – “Flash”). The distance between the objects- about 15-25 cm. Auto focus on the handle of the cup. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

These cameras are recognized among the majority of digital cameras for equally good color reproduction and quick focusing on the objects, even if they are trying to escape from your camera.

Example 3: Focus on objects moving to and fro with 12x optical zoom in. On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

It doesn’t make much sense if we start making a display of numerous examples of similarities between these cameras. We’ll stop making trivial comparisons of their features and proceed to noting peculiar and individual characteristics discovered during the experiments.

The Imperfectness of the Lens

Practical optics has very little in common with the geometrical sums in the physics lessons that students solve while learning about cameras as a kind of equipment. But however accurate the calculations may be, even the most carefully developed ( and rather expensive) model of the lens is not completely perfect. For example, there can be chromatic aberrations, when the objects on the image are colorfully haloed. Test results show that both cameras have the same level of chromatic aberrations. Surprisingly, in spite of the progress of the competitors, Canon hasn’t manage to overcome this problem when developing the Canon S3 into the Canon S5, even after the evolution within internal toolkit. On the whole, in my point of view, the number of drawbacks of cameras for ultra-zoom class is high.

Example 4 : chromatic aberrations are the colourful halos around the bridge footing. This example also displays the difference of the sharpness of the objects in the photo taken by different cameras, but we’ll discuss it later. At the top is the whole shot with the testing

area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5. For both cameras we set semi-auto “Landscape” mode with completely closed aperture, 12x optical zoom in.

Shooting Close-ups – Macro modes

Macro-shooting is not an easy task for a camera, designed as the “the mater of landscape photography”. The technical characteristics for shooting bugs and spiders are just opposite of those for shooting sun-sets and mountain landscape. There are numerous items that can be

evaluated to identify the macro capacity of the camera. In particular, there is a famous test based upon not simply measuring the distance from the lens surface necessary for focusing, but making a photo of a small object wthin the whole shot. The smaller the object, the higher degree of macro capacity of your camera has.

We agreed to experiment upon the monetary unit of our country – coins of different values.

For both the Canon S3 and the Canon S5, macro-shooting is available in two different modes: “macro” and “super-macro”. We had expected to get the similar results, but it turned out that, with the Canon S5, the borderline between these modes suffers influence of its predecessor. While “macro” mode of the Canon S3 enables you to take a photo of 5 coins, that enlargement is not enough for the Canon S5 for it’s limit is 6 coins (shooting of 5 coins requires “super-macro” mode).

Example 5: On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3; on the right, by the Canon S5.

After experimenting at length with “super-macro” mode we managed to take the image of a single coin. By the way, the coin is 15.5 mm in diameter. Unfortunately, this test can’t be characterized as complete. It might be possible to take photos of much smaller objects on the whole screen provided there is extra lighting ( the cover around the lens prevented the addition of more light:in fact the lens was resting on the object; we had to build up a flash reflector, manually-set ISO200 sensitivity, and at last lighten the image with an image editor program.

Example 6: “Super-macro” mode. On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5. The lack of light forced us to set the sensitivity to a high ISO level, and the bright halo around the coin is nothing but a flash, spread all over the tightly-stretched piece of white paper.

Sensor and ISO speed

Both cameras have sensors of 1/2.5′ size, the number of effective pixels (pixel value) is 6 – 8 megapixels. Nowadays 8 megapixels for that type of sensor seem to be the limit (A greater number is quite possible, though it might be not economically feasible).

An important characteristic of digital camera, referring to its sensor, is ISO speed. The manufacturer gives the ISO speed scale from 80 to 800 for the Canon S3 and up to 1600 for the Canon S5. Let’s experiment to evaluate data in low light condition.

Example 7: ISO80 speed. At the top is the whole shot with the testing area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).

Example 8: ISO100 speed. At the top is the whole shot with the testing area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right – by the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).

Example 9: ISO200 speed. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).

From the examples above we may see that an ISO speed within 80- 200 scale makes good results for both cameras, although the results with the higher ISO speeds are not so clear.

Example 10: ISO400 speed. Same cameras and same conditions as above.

Example 11: ISO800 speed. Same cameras and same conditions as above.

While shooting with ISO400 sensitivity gives equally good results, the setting of ISO800 sensitivity enables the new internal algorithm of noise reduction in the Canon S5 to come into play (Heaven knows how it happens – either via auto or programmed mode). As for ISO1600 sensitivity, it is absolutely useless; even the above mentioned noise reduction mechanism doesn’t cope with the noises. Though the manufacturer doesn’t hold this option back from customers.

Example 12: ISO1600 speed of the Canon S5. The same image patch, as in the previous examples (the shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the marked out areas are enlarged in image editor).

By the way, during the experiments with ISO speed, another peculiar feature of both cameras had been noticed. They manage to operate the white balance mode equally good, except when the white balance mode should be set manually at high ISO speed (800 and 1600). The noises of the sensor seem to appear in the program accepted averaged color, that is white.

It is not a great obstacle to overcome for usually the candlelight is used at such a high ISO speed (the dim light of a table-lamp and dingy street-lamps, for example) and you may choose the appropriate manual setting. Still, it is strange why such an imperfect algorithm inherited from its predecessor didn’t go through any changes.

Focusing on the distant objects

It has already been mentioned (discussing chromatic aberrations) that we get different results when focusing on distant object by Canon S3 and Canon S5. To check the fact we shot a series of landscape images with 12x optical zoom in. The semi-auto “landscape” mode was set to provide completely closed aperture along with the other auto-set characteristics (in other words to realize the greatest possible depth of field). To meet the non-stop character of the experiment, the test shots were taken at once without choosing the object to focus on but as soon as the camera informs that its ready to shoot (as soon as it has focused on). In addition, to avoid different views of nature by the cameras, we set “Spot focus” mode. Let me show you the effect referring to the series of shots of a TV tower.

Example 13: Focusing on distant objects with 12x optical zoom in ( “Landscape” mode, “Spot focus” mode). At the top is the shot of the landscape without enlargement; in the middle- the same landscape with 12x optical zoom in (with highlighted testing area). At the bottom to the left is the image by the Canon S3, at the bottom to the right, the image by the Canon S5 (both shots have been enlarged in an image editor).

The results show the pre-eminence of the Canon S5 working in auto focus mode. Probably, the Canon S3 might have shown not as bad results, if it were used in manual focus mode, but then it would break the conditions of the experiment.

Toolkit

“Sharpness” is available for both cameras, being called “Rezkost” in Russian texts. It attracted most attention among the other settings, because in a way it may be regarded as the equivalent of the internal noise reduction option (it doesn’t reduce the noise but highlight the edges, that make impression of a high-quality shot). To test that no changes had been made within the algorithm, we took a number of shots with 400ISO speed (the noises are already conspicuous, but they do not prevail).

Example 14: Internal algorithm of increasing “Sharpness” for the Canon S3 and the Canon S5. At the top the photo with highlighted testing area. In the middle, a shot to the left, taken by the Canon S3 without increasing sharpness, a shot to the right, taken by the Canon S3 at a “high” level of “Sharpness”. In the row below the same operations with the Canon S5.

Based upon the examples above, we may say that this algorithm as well didn’t go through great changes: such a “delicate” way of increasing sharpness with a few artifacts left. It seems as though the manufacturer had not intended to update toolkit for a new model.

The algorithms of compression

It’s a pity, but neither of the cameras deals with RAW files (despite the Canon S5 sporting a new feature which is characteristic of a professional camera; that is, the flash hot shoe for external flash); all the image files are saved in JPEG format with various degree of resolution and compression (both are manually set). To compare the internal algorithms of compression we shot 2 series of photos in “Landscape” mode (to provide the best depth of field on the small far details). The center of the shot had been taken for the testing area to eliminate possibly the influence of the imperfect optics; all the changes were made in BMP format in order to make JPEG artifacts more conspicuous, and at the same time, not to add any extra while preparing shots for publishing; all the image patches were enlarged in the end.

Example 15: The comparison of the internal algorithms of compression for the Canon S3 and the Canon S5. At the top- the photo with highlighted testing area. The shots with the increasing degrees of compression follow below. On the left are the shots taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

The above examples display that the Canon S5 inherits from its predecessor the Canon S3 the visual effect of compression even for the high-quality images. I would recommend either increasing the super- quality of JPEGs (by any possible way) or contribute RAW- format (TIFF/ BMP- any of the formats that compresses without faults); the cameras really suffer from the lack of one!

Features

Among the pleasant innovations for Canon S5, such have been noticed (though not checked):

* extensive work with the same set of batteries (170 shots in stead of 110 – according to the results of the standard test by the manufacturer);

* a hot shoe and sync-contact for external flash.

Summing up

After practical work with both cameras, we at DigiCamFriends.com may conclude that some changes indeed have been made for the new model. This can be observed in such operations as focus on distant objects with high optical zoom or with high ISO speed. These new features helped to correct utter drawbacks found in the Canon S3, in comparison with the success of the similar pairs of cameras by other manufactures. The question is would you agree to pay for these innovations?

Gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931 but it took until the 1940s that the pointspread came into being. Charles McNeil, a Connecticut bettor and bookmaker, generally is credited with the invention of the pointspread though, like so much in the history of wagering, the facts are murky at best and open to interpretation. At any rate, sports betting still was in its infancy, barely able to take its first baby steps before the federal government applied its heavy handed child rearing tactics.

In 1951, Congress imposed a 10 percent tax on sports wagering, all but stuffing the sports betting baby back in the womb. Then, in 1974, largely through the efforts of Senator Howard Cannon (D-Nev.), the tax was dropped to two percent. Nine years later it was cut again, to .025 percent, effectively launching the now burgeoning era of sports betting.

Indeed, in 1973, the year before the federal tax was dropped from 10 percent to two percent, there were 10 sportsbooks in Nevada and the handle was a paltry $2.8 million.

“There was one black-and-white TV set at the old Churchill Downs book, and if the picture fluttered, a guy would whack it with a broom,” remembered oddsmaker Roxy Roxborough, the seminal figure in the rapid growth of the sports betting industry.

Twenty years later, Nevada boasted over 100 sportsbook outlets with a handle of over $2 billion. The numbers in the Silver State have tailed off a bit since the mid-nineties, Nevada’s loss the result of the proliferation of off-shore and Internet wagering outlets. The overall growth of sports betting remains staggering, with ESPN the Magazine estimating in a 2003 article that $63 billion is wagered annually on sports over the Internet. Other estimates run as high as $200 billion annually.

The explosion of sports betting in the mid-eighties largely was the result of a daily double of good fortune; the lowering of the federal tax and the emergence of Roxborough, who everyone calls “Roxy,” as the face of sports betting.

Roxy got his wagering feet wet betting baseball totals. In fact, he may have been the first player to regularly check local weather reports, chronicling the velocity and direction of the wind, a factor which influenced how many balls left the ballpark and, by extension, game totals.

Lured to the other side of the counter by management at the Club Cal-Neva in Reno, it wasn’t long before Roxy, armed with little more than a few hundred dollars and an idea, founded his then fledgling company, Las Vegas Sports Consultants, on his kitchen table. In time, LVSC’s client list grew to include 90 percent of Nevada’s licensed casino sportsbooks.

With a boost from Vic Salerno, the owner of dozens of wagering outlets under the Leroy’s banner and the man who developed the computer system now de rigueur in the industry, LVSC effectively helped transport sportsbooks from the hand-written betting slip Stone Age into the technologically savvy modern sports betting era.

Roxy’s company not only supplied odds, but information on injuries and weather conditions as well. Later, the service added data that tracked line movements, including unusual wagers, alerting sportsbooks to possible betting anomalies that had the potential to devastate their bottom lines.

Well-dressed and well-spoken, Roxy was equally influential in helping to obliterate the pejorative image of the oddsmaker/bookmaker as some sleazy, poorly educated garish figure in a hound’s tooth jacket with a diamond pinky ring and a cigar. Appearing on television shout-fests such as “Crossfire,” Roxy would vanquish the opposition, which included now NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, with a series of well-argued points.

Roxborough has retired from the business of pluses and minuses and no one knows for sure what the coming years will bring, but if the future of sports betting is only half as imaginative and innovative as its glorious past, neither bet makers nor bet takers have reason for concern.

Rollerblading entails learning fancy tricks. To attain this, you need to learn the factors that can promote certain styles and tricks.

Rollerblading is easy. It just takes practice to get used to the tricks and the moves.

What is the Importance of Balance?

Balance is a basic essential of rollerblading or roller skating. It is the major skill you do on skates.

A. Speed

Extraordinary balance is the key to controlling your push and to set down successfully. Skating with one foot on the ground is the key to skating fast. It is not only limited to skating forward but to double push and crossovers.

B. Freestyle

Many moves on skates rely on balance. This means you can skate by touching the ground. Precise and crisp weight transfer for best style depends on balance.

To sum it up, extraordinary balance is a skill which every good skater must develop. In every skating discipline, a good skater must learn this on an exceptional level.

What To Do To Improve Balance?

Goals to work on:

1.	When not on skate

To improve one foot balance, learn yoga. This is an approach by Eddy Matzger. He makes this a part of his skating workshops.

You can practice by brushing your teeth while standing on one leg, barefoot. Some people try to balance interchangeably using both of their legs for two minutes, while brushing. Their goal is to hold on. They also change the amount of knee bend. There are days that they stand at a recreational bend. There are times when they stand in a speed skater bend or in-between. It will soon make a big difference to your skill in balancing.

2.	Wobble boards

A wooden board is in the form of a wooden disc. It has a hemisphere on the lower surface. It’s obvious that it requires two foot balancing and it is actually easy. Later on, it gets harder when you practice balancing with one foot and with your eyes closed.

3.	Scooters

This is a combination drill. It works using one-foot for skating balance while pushing correctly to the side.

4.	Toe Rolls

This is a slightly difficult drill. It tests how you do your balancing with one foot while you do another “skate rolling” behind you. This also requires you to do this via a toe wheel, so as to give balance.

5.	T-Stopping

Learn to T-stop well and evenly on both sides. It’s a superb way to learn to balance correctly. The destabilizing action of the dragging foot is much harder to manage than just a simple toe-roll.

6.	Poop Trench Drill

It is one of the favorites of Sebastian Baumgartner. It involves two similar lines. On the left line, you balance on your left skate. On the right line, you hop across and balance on your right skate.

7.	Over-carving Drill

This is simply skating while carving. Each step causes a turn on one foot. This is also an excellent drill to work your balance on. Keep your weight in your heels so as to perfect your heel carve control.

These drills focus on the left-right balance during skate steering. There’s also a required fore-aft balance to focus on also. This can be worked by the following:

Grass stops. Learn to skate backward to either side.

Awoogas. If you are on the workshop of Eddy Matzger, you must familiarize yourself with these:

-	two-foot slalom

-	one-foot slalom

Finally, don’t forget to practice more on the weak side. This will bring up to the ability on your good side. Working on your weaknesses will improve your skating.

There are thousands of snowboards available on the market today and finding that right one for you can turn out to be overpowering. If you don’t know anything about snowboarding, deciding to make your first snowboard purchase can become a major headache really fast.

Come visit us right here for more info on Burton Snowboarding. We are the greatest source of info on Snowboarding today.

http://forumsnowboarding.org

Before deciding to buy a snowboard, especially if you have never snowboarded before, you may probably want to hire one, first. By renting a snowboard you’ll be in a position to learn better what works best for you, what you like and do not like and you’ll even learn if snowboarding is right for you. Buying a snowboard is a massive investment and before you spend that type of money on a board, you may first desire to make certain that snowboarding is something that you are going to stay with.

When deciding to purchase a board you will first need to take into account what sort of riding style you’ll be doing. Boards are made for different aspects of riding ; therefore , finding the one that is made for what you want to do will help you in the long run. Are you going to freestyle? Do you need a board that will work with all kinds of terrain? Do you want a board that you can play in the park with on the half pipe and rails? These are only some of the questions that you can ask yourself to help you narrow down the probabilities in your board options.

Finding the right board length for you is very important. Some riders prefer longer boards while other ones prefer shorter boards. Maneuverability on the course is a major player in the game of boarding, so depending upon what sort of boarding you want to do will help to ascertain what type of maneuverability you will need and the length of the board can help and/or can impede your performance.

Next, the board width is very important. The width of the board that you will need all relies on the dimensions of your shoes. You don’t want a board where you feet are hanging off one side or the other, this can be very deadly and it can make your ride tougher on you. Ensure that the width of your board fits you well.

The materials and the type of effective edge that the board has are also determining factors for choosing the right board for you. Wood is costlier but helps to absorb some of the energy in a hard landing.

During the winter of 2006/07, Europe suffered one of the worst snowfalls on record. As the busy Christmas and New Year season approached, ski resorts across the continent waited nervously for the snow to arrive. But the snow never came – at least not in the quantities normally expected.

Many skiers and snowboarders were faced with the grim prospect of skiing on thin strips of artificial snow, or were shipped to other resorts higher in altitude, along with everyone else, to compete for what little white stuff there was on the ground.

Global warming was made the scapegoat for the poor conditions, although it’s more likely that this was just a freak season, (global warming is generally regarded as a more gradual process) but there’s no denying that winter seasons in Europe and all over the world have been getting shorter and ski resorts are receiving less snow than in previous years.

However, rather than putting the punters off, the popularity of snow sports is growing year on year, probably due to the availability of cheap flights to many cities near ski resorts and the rise in the number of young people taking up skiing or snowboarding in one of the growing number of snow domes or dry slopes in the UK.

But along with the weather, the way people book their skiing holidays appears to be changing. Rather than book a ski package several months in advance and risk bad conditions, more people are keeping a close eye on the snow forecast and then booking a D.I.Y. trip at the last minute. Booking flights, accommodation and transfers separately may be a little more hassle than booking a package, but it can actually be cheaper and is also more flexible.

Another tactic is the advance booking of a flight to a city which has several ski resorts within easy reach, and then choosing the resort with the best snow conditions at the last minute. By booking early it is possible to get cheap flights to Zurich, Geneva, Lyon, Innsbruck or Toulouse for example, all of which have dozens of well known ski resorts within just a couple of hour’s drive from the airport.

As the world’s weather becomes ever more unpredictable and snowfalls become more unreliable, it’s likely that these methods of booking will become the norm, and we may see the decline of the traditional “early bird” package, except in the highest, most snow sure ski resorts.
